Project: Gator

I think there are more lurkers on this section of the forum than posters, but any way here is my little project's thread. I am a self proclaimed enginerd; not an engineer, but I know enough to be dangerous about a lot of things. Hopefully I can document some decent tech, and maybe help some people answer questions as I answer many of my own (I have learned a lot from this forum in the last few months). There isn't a whole lot out on the 'net with these machines, especially once modified.

I have been wanting a SXS for some time now and never really knew which way I wanted to go. I travel GA, FL & AL as a farm machinery rep and have one particular dealer that sells red tractors and Polaris ATVs. Got to talking about what I wanted one day; I wanted to haul ass like a RZR but also have a hair of utility like a Ranger so I have the ability to use it when I want to. I started to pencil that into the budget, but the jury was still out (wife). But these guys are 200miles from my house and I have never dealt with the Polaris place 20min from me. There is no CanAm dealer close, so that's out.

Fast forward a little bit and I spot a handful of RSXs at a few of my green dealerships. I remember in '12 I test drove a RSX at a farm show and loved it. Started asking around to my salesmen about the RSX, have they had problem machines, happy customers, etc. Mainly people not really liking the torque, so they trade down to the smaller gators and a few relate the RSX to a Commander under a Gator hood. Sign me up! I really dig the dump bed and the physical size of the machine; bigger than a RZR yet smaller than a Ranger. Great plus is I have about 45 green dealers I deal with and one of them is 4miles from my house and I can make it there nearly all on dirt road.

So I kept my eyes peeled on their lots for a low hour unit while reading up all I could on the web here. Came to the end of May and the mongo discount was being lost for the '14 machines and I found a new '14 machine that was moved from MS, to AL, to GA in one of my chains. The price was right so here we are. Wasn't looking for a base model, but for the premium Deere & Co wants for a Sport; I can use the money I didn't spend and turn this into exactly what I want. And really all I am going to be doing is riding dirt roads around the house, going from camp to the toilet at mud bogs and the occasional trail ride with my pal's. Should be fun.

Sorry for the book, I get to rambling. I know I will have a good bit of questions, and there are some great people on this forum to answer them.

Like I said, picked up my RSX and the end of May.

Had some friends going riding that weekend, so I tagged along.

Second trail of the day. But put it in 4wd and it back right out.

All in all, the machine fully impressed me. Rode 95% of the trails in 2wd including some pretty respectable hill climbs. Ground clearance wasn't anything to right home about, but it wasn't a huge set-back. The biggest setback was these base model tires. They were too soft and let mud between the tire and wheel. I blew one bead way away from camp (no big deal, cleaned it up, shot some air in it and continued to haul ass) and when I got back from my trip to IN a few days later I had three flat tires on the trailer. Either way, not a terrible first time out.

But we made it back in one piece.

Little more leg room?

Hi everyone, new to the forum, first Gator , 855D xuv 2011.
Was wondering if there is a way to get the seats to go back further. I'm 6'4" and its a little cramped , even with the seat slid all the way back. The passenger seat appears fixed and is a lot more cramped. Does anyone know if there are kits that give the seats the ability to go back further or am i on my own doing the old farm mods?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Vulnerible Gator XUV radiator solution

Here along the White River in Indiana, there is awesome riding opportunities, so long as you have legal permission.(Many just do it no matter what) But along that river is some of the craziest and wooliest stuff known to make short work of both CV boots, as well as radiators not properly protected. Some of the dried stalks from the previous growing season of tall and thick weed varieties, will often harpoon both your face, as well as your machine's vitals. Over the years it has cost me a couple grand in radiators, and while the XUV is an awesome "crossover machine", it has one of the worst rad-exposure potentials I've seen in any manufacturer. What JD was/is thinking with that one is beyond me, but I'd like to not be paranoid enough to think it was intentional. All that said, if your riding/use area has thick hazards, no question you will want to do something about it. I have started fabricating add-on brush-screens that have proven to completely safeguard the radiator no matter how thick it gets out there, and have been told it actually adds to the machine's appearance. I use a carbon-steel 1/8 inch weave diameter x 3/8 inch square opening for fabrication of the main bumper insert, that I finish weld to the bumper on the rear side of it...tacking each weave. That gets painted using a good grade bed-liner. I then fab a second set of inserts using a high-grade stainless 3/16ths square weave, that bolsters the main brush guard; The larger first insert will stop the swing of a ball-bat and not suffer so much as a bend, and the second and tighter weave catches and stops the smaller stuff that would still damage the radiator. Basically will protect your entire front-end from branches that may otherwise bust your plastic, in addition to trash your rad. I also eliminate that lower stop-pin on the bumper that only allows you to swing the bumper out far enough to raise the hood. Cleaning the rad-clogging fuzzies out is sooo much easier when you can swing that bumper all the way down and out of the way. I personally use a commercial grade window-screen material I place on the face of the radiator itself, and that way I simply lower the bumper and remove and clean that screen as needed. Also makes hosing-out mud-build-up much easier. Anyway, you can purchase these, 'Coth-screens' screen materials for all parts mentioned above, from a steel supplier and do the work yourself if you have the tools and skills, or you can contact me and I will fabricate you a set with bumper-exchange, for a price, of course, on my ebay account, using PayPal as an obvious security. I have done this mod for several of my friends, and they suggested that I put it out there. It's a super good mod, and even fun if you do the fabrication yourself. I build custom Kubota RTVs, as well as a ZX1400 Ninja-powered Gator 625i I'm currently building. I've been a fabricator my entire life, and so it's just in my blood to weld/improve and modify things.

Two photos, if they work, are prior to the bolster screen and stop-pin removal. I will post more later, but you get the general idea.

New to this forum thing, so you can direct me as needed, without being rude. I just may have a fix for something YOU will benefit from, some time. So, be cool. :)

I have a 825i and can't get the fuel pump to run. When you turn the key I get 12 volts at the connector for a few seconds and then it goes to nothing before the pump even has a chance to kick on. Tried switching relays. Replaced connector to pump. Nothing. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have a 825 p/s, with the factory bench seat. I would like to switch it over to the factory bucket and center console. The local Deere dealer is no help, saying if it is not ordered with it they cannot convert it.
Has anyone done this?
I am prepared to spend some money, but how to I order the parts?

Winch Not Working

I have a warn provantage 3500s winch. The winch seems to work fine before I ride and the gator starts to get hot. When the temp increases on the gator the winch stops working and does not make a clicking sound or anything...it doesn't do anything when I press the button. After the gator cools down it starts working again. The solenoid is mounted under the seat next to the battery. Is the solenoid getting too hot? Any ideas?

Winshield wiper wash

Just installed the full glass windshield with the wiper, when I ordered the windshield I saw that John Deere had a windshield washer kit available. Was going to order till I saw that it was $300. Went and looked on amazon.com and found and aftermarkert universal kit for $20. The fluid tank is small enough that I mounted in the under hood compartment. The only thing I had to buy was a longer piece of hose from the pump to the windshield. I had an old chevy wiper arm in the shed , and took the spray nozzle off and it clipped right on the wiper on the gator. If anyone wants this kit go to amazon and search windshield washer kit, the kit is made by ACI

Gas petal questions

Alright. My machine had a clutch kit put in just before I bought it. It's a Quadboss 414760 Sport utility clutch. I've never driven it stock to know what it felt like before, but this catching and releasing at 2300RPM is tricky and kind of ignoring. I know that's not related to my title of this thread but it does tie in.

The gas petal has a bit of a tough initial push it seems to get the engine reving. Anyone know how to soften that? I searched around and found a tighter spring to add more pressure once the petal is pushed. That got ride of the reving while going over larger rocks at higher speeds.

The Aftershock XD proved tough at this year's King of the Hammers so we jumped at the opportunity when Arisun reached out to provide us with a set to test at this year's Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks. At first glace, the Aftershock XD features a tread pattern similar to leading Light Truck (LT) mud terrain tires. With large tread blocks, siped knobs, and high void ratio, the Aftershock XD is poised to tackle the toughest terrain. To accurately gauge a tires toughness though, you need to know what's going on inside. The 8-ply rated radial Arisun Aftershock XD utilizes an exclusive anti-puncture technology called K3D Armor. K3D Armor is a lightweight aramid reinforced composite material placed between two layers of nylon that wraps around the shoulder/ sidewall for added durability and puncture resistance. After a week of testing on trails ranging from Wipe out Hill and Cliff Hanger, to Poison Spider and Moab Rim, the Arisun Aftershock XD held up to the punishment of the rugged Moab rocks and not once left us with a flat. If you're after a durable 8-ply rated tire for your side by side that can handle the harshest of terrain, the Aftershock XD by Arisun may be the right tire model for you.

Hello,
Got an 850i last December and things have been great till this past weekend when I thought I broke my linkage. Turns out the linkage is intact but is spinning on the vertical shaft out of the transmission. Haven't had a chance to tear into it yet but if anyone has had this problem before help would be appreciated. Nice to be here will be contributing with pictures and experiences.

Lift kits 4-12"!!!!

New member here, but over the last 6 months I have been doing a lot of research and talking to people experienced with larger lifts on bikes. I understand everyone has their own experiences and opinions of shops but from everything I have found the most highly recommended shop in the industry(based on my recollection of conversations and from others experiences) is S3 in Shreveport LA. I myself have not had a SxS until the RSX I got last December. I haven't done any modifications to it until I felt I got a good amount of break in hours on it. Currently at 35 hours. My wife likes going to the parks around East Texas and riding, I myself would rather just ride around the deer lease. But after my experiences at the parks around here I figured out I am no where near tall enough to ride 60% of the trails with out sinking or severily damaging my machine. All that being said I would like to put a 4-6" lift to be able to clear 32-34" tires. And to give me the ground clearance to not high center in every other hole I come across. I'm not looking to play hippo I'd just rather not drown if it can be avoided. All that being said, I have been talking to S3 about making larger A arm lifts for the RSX but their reply was basically their isn't a demand currently for them. Which I understand but I was hoping there were some people on this forum that could give me some advice/experiences/different shop experiences/etc. so that maybe if I can get a large enough demand we can get some more lifts available for the RSXs out there. Sorry for the 2 chapters of a book. Look forward to replays and comments.

Wheel issue?

I know there was a clearance issue with aftermarket wheels at one point.

Is this still the case or is there a solution as of yet?

I'm obviously looking into another set of wheels for the RSX.

Thanks
