Gator 6X4 coolant in oil

I automatically suspect blown head gasket. Ran leak down test on both cylinders and found significant leakage on front cylinder. Small amount from exhaust system indicating leaky valve but it's not enough to cause the pressure drop I'm seeing. I'm also not seeing air bubbles in the radiator which I certainly expected to with blown head gasket. Any help is appreciated.

2000 4x2 ignition

A friend gave it to me last summer, it ran fine but had hood/fender damage, trashed seats and rust. I got it all cleaned up, new hood/fenders/ seats and repainted it to be used as a get around at our hunting camp. Well, I parked it in Oct and for many reasons didn't get to use it all. It just sat. I vaguely recall having to jiggle the key a couple of times to get it to start, really only used it a week or two, but I think that happened once or twice.

I decided to haul it back home and it would not crank. Turning the key did nothing, no click, nothing. I charged the battery before I even tried. It reads 12.7 v at the starter solenoid terminal. When I jump the two terminals on the solenoid, the starter motor just spins, doesn't engage the engine. Key is turned on when I do this.

I ordered a new ignition switch, but wondering if it has another problem if the starter motor just spins. Or does the ignition switch have other safety circuits within it that would prevent the starter from engaging.

I would think it could be hotwired if it's just an ignition switch, but with 6 wires on the switch, the combo options of which wires do what are many. I couldn't find a wiring diagram and would think it would just be a power and starter wire to jump.

Thoughts on what could be causing the starter motor to not engage when the solenoid is jumped ? and any info on how to jump/Hotwire it to bypass a bad ignition switch, if that could be the problem ?

Appreciate any thoughts, thanks...

Deeper Water Crossings

New 825i and we finally get to take it to the Ozarks for a quick ride. With all the rain we've had recently the creeks were a little high.

We watched a Rhino cross a deeper creek with no problems and the water came to the top of their tires, so across we go. The first trip across we had no problem, water a couple of inches into the cab floorboard. But on the way back across we choose a different line which was a few inches deeper and just before we made it across the belt started slipping. We barley made it out, or it just barley pulled us up the bank. I took it easy and after a bit it dried out and we made it fine.

Now I don't do serious off roading, but what can I do to my buggy to help in in these med deep crossings?? I'd like to cross about 24" or so deep. Somewhere I saw a snorkel kit from a Kabota??? Will I need one for the belt and another for the breather???

Thanks,

I have turf tires 23x9.5x12 ft & 23x10.5x12 backs, of my 825i. Need a more aggressive tread. Cannot find any that match those dimensions. What are your suggestions. Want a mid-aggressive tire. How big can I go in front without a lift kit? Where do I go to buy/research JD tires? Thanks for your input!!

825i drain plug stripped first oil change

I'm starting to think I got a lemon or John Deere has stopped doing any quality control on their machines. Went to do my first 8 hour oil change on my brand new gator. Oil drain plug was so extremely tight that I had to use a breaker bar to get it broke loose. Went ahead and got the filter off and changed the oil. Put the plug back in and snugged up. Problem is plug never snugged up. They either cross threaded the plug from the factory or tightened the damn thing so much it stripped the threads. With 10 Hours on this machine and the several problems I've had im beginning to think I made a huge 13k mistake on the purchase of this machine.

I was looking on Koplin's website and they have a cab for the Xuv 550, but not for the rsx. You can order just the windshield, roof, and back panel. They have doors available but it doesn't look like they would fit the rsx. The John Deere part numbers for the John Deere roof, windshield, back panel are the same for the rsx and the xuv are the same. Does anyone have any idea if the rsx and xuv rollcages and bodywork are the same?

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all who helped with replies and PM as I considered Deere for my first SXS. In the end there were some things I did not like about the Commander which had been my first choice having been allergic to green for decades. Working with a great dealership about 75 miles from here, I found the Deere to be pretty much what I wanted for trail riding in the Sugarloaf/Flagstaff area of Maine. Leftover 2014 RSX850i Sport off the showroom floor for $11k even and a SuperATV power steering kit going in later next week after delivery. I hope I am not one of those with reliability issues as I will be riding with friends but usually only one ATV till they get theirs. :D

ALL NEW TO THE GATOR!

so i just got the bed up yesterday, had to remove the hydraulic lift pin to the frame.:D

i got 6 wires loose and i believe one missing plug (2 wires are the battery
wires so im just trying to track down the other 4)

2 wires (red/black) run from battery area to the very front assuming they are for key switch

other 2 wires are also red/black, except this red has a fuse able link in between
and the black fairly short...

be back with photos in about 3-4 hours

850D Starting Help Please

'09 850D - When I hit the starting switch there is a click like a starter solenoid but it's coming from the opposite side of the engine near or at the fuel injection pump. Problem seems to be mostly once warm, but not always, and has progressively gotten worse. Battery's charged and after 10 or 15 tries starter connection will make up to the starter and fire right up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I looked but did not find any specific portal on the John Deere web site devoted to the receipt of consumer-based feedback/comments/complaints regarding Gator quality or design. Did I miss it? I would think that even just monitoring this forum would be instructive to Deere QC managers.

Has anyone owned one of these?

850D Starting System Issue

'09 850D - Recently when I hit the starting switch there is a click like a starter solenoid but it's coming from the opposite side of the engine near or at the fuel injection pump. Problem seems to be mostly once warm, but not always, and has progressively gotten worse. It finally stuck me for over 20 minutes yesterday so now I can no longer trust it to start at all. The battery's charged and till yesterday, it would take 5 to 10 tries to make connection to the starter and then fire right up. I was going to buy a new starter once this first happened BUT after running the clicking down to the opposite side of the engine from the starter I no longer think that is the issue. Something in the electrical path is stopping the starter (solenoid) from being energized. Any knowledge of the starting system will be greatly appreciated.

We keep adding new exciting products to our ATV/UTV lineup and are pleased to announce the newest edition, the Regulator A/T by Tensor Tire!
Click Here For: Sizes, Specs and Pricing on the Tensor Regulator A/T

*Receive a $50 Visa Prepaid Card with the purchase of 4 Tensor Regulator A/T tires between Thursday, May 14th and Sunday, May 31st, 2015

We put the Regulator A/T to the test this past week on the rugged trails in Moab, UT at the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks Event. Our testing grounds for this tire were
Sevenmile Rim (including Wipe out Hill), Moab Rim Trail, Poison Spider (in the rain!) and Cliff Hanger. Those of you that have been to Moab know these are trails that will
put the toughness of your tire to the test. With 8-Ply rated radial construction derived from Light Truck tire design, the Tensor Regulator A/T proved to be a worthy competitor.

The Regulator A/T utilizes a wide contact patch that dramatically increases traction. Couple this with an optimized rubber compound for all conditions and the dry, wet and
at times sandy slickrock were no match for the Regulator A/T. The grip was simply outstanding. We also put approximately 60 miles of pavement on these tires, at highway
speeds, while making our way to and from the trails. The tires ran straight, smooth and with limited road noise. At the end of the week they showed very little wear.

If you are looking for a tough UTV tire that delivers excellent traction and treadwear, the Tensor Regulator A/T may be worth a look.

Key Features

  • 19/32nds tread depth (all sizes)
  • Deep tread lug on the shoulders for improved cornering traction
  • Variable tread pattern delivers smoothest, quietest ride possible
  • Wider footprint for enhanced handling and braking
  • Steel belted construction derived from Light Truck tire design
  • 8-Ply Construction with nylon reinforcement layer
