New-to-me gator project

Hi, all! I posted in the introduction section to introduce myself, but I figure I'll start a thread here to talk more about my gator itself. I've just picked up a '98 6x4 gas gator in trade for a junked up old truck. (and I got a junked up old gator!)
I'm a landscaper, so I figure I'll try to get good enough to get some use out of this year, and then this winter tear it all down and do a more thorough rebuild.
I just came back in from getting it started (finicky neutral switch and a jump got me going.) So next step is to deal with a bad bearing in the input shaft. I can move it in reverse, but it binds up in forward. The bearing is long gone. Here's the catch, the flange on the case is totally chewed up. Anybody got any brilliant ideas to get me running short term. I figure I'll have to track down a used transmission or that left side of the case at some point, but as things are picking up quite steadily with work, my wrenching will be quite limited for awhile.

2012 550 S4 Stuck in 4 Wheel Drive

Hello, I searched the forums but could not find this specific topic.

I just bought a 2012 550 S4. Only 128 hours on it and in excellent condition. There are a few things I need to look at but first is the fact that it will not come out of 4wd. Seems the lever inside the dash (gold lever mounted on a shaft between the two shifters with a cable on top and bottom of it) is not springing back to release it from 4wd. Any insight is appreciated.


As a side note - Looks like very little off road use - first owner was a college campus for moving people around the grounds, second owner was fellow who did a bit of corn field trails with his grand kids.

XUV diesels 4 wheel drive

As you know I picked up 3 Gator XUV diesels a few months ago. Had to put new clutches and electric fuel pumps on them. They run great now.

So yesterday I started working on the ripped boots on the front axle CV joints. Well, took off the wheels on one and popped the lower ball joints loose. While doing this I looked for the drive shaft that comes from the rear axle to drive the 4wd front axle. There was no drive shaft!!! :eek: After looking real close I realized that there was never a drive shaft. The areas where the drive shaft would of went thru some sheet metal was never cut out to make room for a drive shaft.

I guess I will save a bunch of money by not repairing the half shafts and CV joints now! :D Going to take the shaft out that couples the two CV joints and replace the lower ball joints on the A arms.

Never heard of a model with the complete 4X4 front axle assembly being made to be a 2 wheel drive from the factory, and I have 3 of them.

soft rear panel or poly rear?

What is your guys opinion on a rear panel? You like the soft panels or hard poly panels better? Reason? I'm getting ready to order either but I can't decide on which one.

Purchased a new 625i Gator to replace a 1997 Kawasaki Mule. Gator will support a 325 acre tree farm and hunting activities in northern Wisconsin. Have about 5 hours of experience with it...nice suspension..loud exhaust...awkward steering wheel position...lots of nice accessories. Hope the mechanical durability fulfills JD reputation. Lots of interesting info on the forum.

2009 XUV 850D, Rear Axle Removal?

Hello, I have a 2009 XUV 850D that I am trying to replace the rear right axle shaft. Does it just pull out like most other ATV Axles? Do you have to remove the right side of case to get the axle out?:confused:

Shredding Belts after EPI kit installed

Have shredded 2 belts now in less than 500 miles. First belt was a Gates belt, second was JD. Any thoughts or advice?

hi, my wife and I have been landscapers over 40 years. still working and in our mid 60s. we are looking at 825i and625 gators. we have 5 acres and cut firewood and garden on it.its fairly flat and wet in some areas. im wondering if the kaw23hp would be enough power to haul wood etc.?? also does the power steering make that much difference?? we are new to these machines so please give us some input. we have had kaws on all our mowers and you cant beat them. just don't know if you need more power for this kind of machine?? thanks in advance. jim and sue

I need a repair book on my 4x6 gator it is a 1994 my valves are not moving.. got internal problems and I need some guidance.. I've looked everywhere and they all say they have it for free til I get there.. than they don't have it!! HELP!!:confused:

hi, we are going to buy a gator but are unsure which one to get. we have 5 acres which we cut wood and garden on along with horse pasture. the land is fairly flat but wet in a few places. we have been in the landscape business over 40 years and most of our equip. has kaw engines and we love them. my concern, is if I get the625, will I be under powered?? any help would be appreciated. thanks jim and sue

aftermarket from other brands

Ok im just curious if anyone has seen or know of stuff that fit the other brands that have a large aftermarket, that would also work on our gators.
like if you got aftermarket parts for a rzr if they ould also work on a gator?
like high clearance radius rods , aftermarket cage doors,nerf bars,wheel spacers ect.

Door latch

Has anyone upgraded the latches on their RSX doors? Half a he time they come open or you have to slam the door two or three times to latch it. I hate the cheesy way it feels when it does latch. New latches and multiple adjustments haven't helped.

gator xuv 850d engine seize

hi guys, a friend recently flipped my gator onto its side. he righted it back onto its wheels and tried to crank the starter but failed to start. i have received the gator back and the engine has seized. i have removed the tappet cover and the glow plugs and noted that one of the cylinders was filled with oil. can anyone please advise me as where to go from here. i am in a remote location so sending it to a john deere mechanic is not an option.

Gator XUV 550 S4

We own a 2012 XUV 550 S4. It was purchased new in spring 2013. The parking brake cable snapped after we had owned it approximately three months. We were driving on mostly flat ground with the occasional trip up or down a hill. Nothing was abused in that three month span. The parking brake was rarely used. We did not park it on uneven ground or in any manner that might be considered dangerous when the cable was operational.

Has anyone else had this same issue?

RSX 850i Buy or Not?

Hi guys,

I have been looking at a new leftover Trail for a couple weeks. Cost is prob less than $13K out the door with tax. It's this or an 800XT Can Am. I have always had Bombardier and it seems like there are a fair amount of troubles with the Deere machine here on the forum. Not withstanding the need for a SuperATV p/s kit for another five hundred. I figure I will have about 10 days to ride and uptime is key for me. Someone here said be afraid, be very afraid. Still true or give this a try?

Need help with part number Gator 6x4 spindle

Hi
I need to replace the passenger side front spindle on our 1997 6x4 Gator (gas).
The old one is bent and is ruining the tire.
Theres a couple on ebay I found, but it only lists the part number and I want to be sure it's the right side and not left.
Here's the number: VG11666
I think the left side is part#: VG11667

They may have newer part numbers as well.
