I was looking at the JD parts manual and from what I see the front / rear wheels are not the same. Is this true?

The description shows front 12x7 and the rear 12x8.

newbie with an OLD Gator

Hi,
I am helping my son with an older 1996 Gator Gas 6X4
We are simply trying to resurrect this old gal - and make it safe to use around the "gentleman's" farm in Northern Virginia.

This old beast has three electrical issues:
1.) someone has fiddled with the coolant temp switch that controls the electric fan and has disconnected it
2.) the charging light is on all the time - and of course, battery is not charging
3.) the oil pressure light is on all the time. (plenty of oil and appears to be an indicator issue)

Where would I locate the engine ID tag - there is supposed to be differences based on the ENGINE S/N -?

Suggestions on how to troubleshoot (without simply replacing parts) for the charging system/regulator circuit

Thanks in advance

Hey all. We bought our Gator 11 months ago as a way to help us get around and inspect a 700 acre property over in Louisiana.

We don't get over there a whole lot so as of last weekend it had a grand total of 6.5 hours on it. It gets stored inside and is driven on basic fire lanes for the most part and leads a pretty pampered existence.

This trip, the first issue was the winch. Click the button and no workee. Worked fine the last time but now, nada. I checked the fuses and all seemed good. The tranny had been sticking but this last visit, was completely unusable. Had to turn off the motor for it to shift. After the third or fourth restart, the battery was laboring and figured we better not push our luck. Decided we should just get it up to the dealer and let them sort it all but was thinking "at least we're under warranty". When we get to the dealer we are informed that since it is a "commercial title" vehicle, we only got a 6 month warranty instead of 12.

We also got the replacement oil filter in the mail but when we asked the dealer about it, they said our VIN wasn't one that needed it. It's getting an oil change and filter while its there anyway but makes me wonder how informed the service department is since they didn't seem to know too much about what seems like common issues with the 850's

Hopefully this story has a warm and fuzzy ending but we'll keep you posted.

rear end noise on 2001 4x2

Hello all,
I just purchased a 2001 4x2 gator. it runs great but the rear end is noisy as heck, luck a grumbling noise. The brakes also squeak when stopping but work well. I changed the transaxel fluid but really didn't help. It runs, drives, shifts and stops fine. Any suggestions? Is there a simple way to clean the brakes of dust? Thanks

rust proofing a gator ?

Hello, we have a place in Bimini Bahamas, home where perfectly good golf carts go to start a slow but sure death. I have had it with golf carts over there so bought a 2001 gator. The environment can play havoc as far as corrosion and rust. Before sending it I was going to spray some of the undercoat stuff under the carriage and install a splash guard to keep puddles from splashing the engine/transmission areas. I know the lift gate is prone to rusting. Any other ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Hello and regards from beyond the pond. First of all thanks to Neil for activating my account.

Now some infos about me. I'm owner of some John Deere and LANZ tractors (and gardentractors) and bought yesterday my first GATOR - a XUV 550.

I've been looking for a gator several years, but never found "the right one". This year in march, my JD dealer called me and said, he has a HPX for me. But it was very expensive and not very comfortable.
But than he invited me for one more off road test - and I purchased my first XUV.

Please let me be a lurker for the first time - I've to learn very much new things (and please excuse my german english).

Need Suggestions on Tire Upgrades

$

Have the base RSX850i with the 12x6" front steel rims and 12x7" rear steel rims. I'd like to keep my existing rims but upgrade from my existing Ancla 25/8/12's & 25/10/12's 4 ply. Most of my riding is rocky & wooded mountain trails with some red dirt, creeks & a little mud.

Without a lift kit, spacers, or any other structural mods, what are larger size tires that will fit without rubbing? Would like more GC and puncture resistance for rocky trails. Shock placement in the rear doesn't look to be able to accommodate much more width but I'm open to suggestions on tire sizes and brands others have used successfully. Any help from the forum is appreciated.

Gator TS Noise

Hi,

I have a bunch of gator TS vehicles. These machines are loud but have a proud sound to them. One of the gators has a sound that when it's idling, sounds normal, but when you press the gas it has a loud whine or roar. The other gators have a nice put put sound to them. They all ride nicely, but was wondering if anyone had ideas as to what this whine could be. I can post an audio clip of what it sounds like

In gear while idling?

If I want to leave my machine idling while stopped, is it best to leave it in neutral?

I'm assuming neutral but I don't know for sure therefore thought it might make good discussion.

How many of you that do this have had clutch failure?

Mudd and water depth

I'm looking at getting a 825i. I duck hunt in the Mississippi Delta. The mud down there is like nothing I've ever seen. It's like gumbo, it just builds and builds on tires and the machine needs to have the horsepower to sling the mud off the tires. I am reasonably sure the 825 has the HP to handle the mud. My real question is how does it do in water? I've noticed that the airfilter is right under the seat and I am also wondering if you get any belt slippage in water as well. How can I expect this machine to handle rice fields and mud and water?

Problems and fixes??

Just returned from a 12 day ride in central Idaho and have 3 new concerns and need help/input on what's causing them. #1- When stopping after a good ride when I shut the engine off (in gear) there is a loud clunk, it seems to be coming from the rear drive train. #2- When leaving on a cold engine there is a squealing sound like a belt is slipping or something, my buddy says it sounds like a horn honking from behind. At low speed it sounds like a flapping sound as if the belt is fraying. #3- Transmission hangs up in reverse and you can't shift into drive sometimes, had to re-shift into reverse and back up some more to get it to go into drive. Its still under warranty so I will take it to the dealer but would like some input as to possible causes so I can give the dealer some suggestions, thanks for your time guys.
