2018 John Deere Gator XUV835 and XUV865 Review: First Drive

The new 2018 John Deere Gator XUV and HPX lineup was introduced at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Ill. and we had a chance to test out the new machines.

John Deere sent us a low-key invitation to see and drive its new 2018 John Deere Gator XUV and HPX models at the Farm Progress Show, an event I was covering for sister site Tractor.com. I wasn’t expecting much beyond some new colors, but I was very wrong.

The event began an hour before the showgrounds opened. Judging from the media present, there were a lot of others thinking ho-hum and let’s sleep in. Mark Davey, marketing manager, opened a PowerPoint presentation beginning with the full size 2018 John Deere Gatopr XUV835 and XUV865. The 835 is powered by a 54 hp gasoline engine and has a top speed of 45+ mph. The 865 is powered by a 23 hp diesel engine and has a top speed of 30 mph. Three trim levels are offered: E, M and R.

I would like to put a rear view mirror on each side of my 825i. Looking at the accessories catalog, all I see are made for the deluxe cab. Do they make mirrors for the OPS with roof and windshield? Thanks to anyone who can help.

6x4 throttle cable

Hey guys. So I was driving my gator 6x4 this afternoon and the throttle cable snapped back at the motor end (knob broke off of the end of the cable where it attaches to the linkage). I should've known it was coming because the petal did not move very smoothly when depressed. My problem is, I don't know what cable to buy because I have no idea what year this thing is. I was told by the person I bought it from that it's a 2003, but after a little research, I think I was again lied to.

The serial number is W006X4X038164. Can someone tell me the year so I can get the right cable? Also, does anyone have a link to a place that sells them for a reasonable price? Thanks!

Multi-mount winch mount for Superwinch Terra 45

I am considering changing from a winch in the nose to the one that fits in the receive hitch so I can fit it on front or rear. I see JD sells one for the Warn and rated for 3000 lbs. JD resells the Warn 4500 but do not seem to offer a receiver hitch type mount.

I cannot find one that fits the Superwinch bolt hole pattern. I see many for the larger winches.

I guess what I really need is someone to weld my current mount to a receiver extension. I wonder if the receiver hitch can handle the load.

Question about 6x4 Carb

Hey folks,

I've been doing some work to my 1999 6x4 and noticed that there is a small outlet pipe that is coming out of the carb but doesn't have a hose hooked to it. When I looked at the parts diagram, it says a hose should be on there, but doesn't show me where it goes. When I cover the hole w/my finger when the engine is running, it tends to hesitate like it's flooding out. I'm not exactly sure of what this tube does, but I'm sure it should at least have a hose on it.

My question is: Does the hose connect to something or does it just hang to act as a drain for any excess fuel that may spill out of the carb bowl? The attached picture shows the tube that I'm referencing.

Also - my gator doesn't have an air restrictor indicator on it, even though the parts breakout shows it having one. This means yet again I have something that is not connected, so I'd like to at least close the open hole. Where does this air restrictor indicator connect to the air system?

Thanks!

4WD Engage Qustions 825i

This may sound crazy to all, but can any one tell me what the proper way is to engage the 4wd? being brand new to the Gator after using and reading the owners manual on engaging its confusing. Its my under standing if I may be correct to use the 4wd on demand simply stop push 4wd switch on with Differential light coming on in electronic panel. To engage lock lever stop the gator and pull lever in to upward position. Dis- Engage the same reverse order.

When is best to use just on demad and not the lever engaged to lock real wheels? Thanks in advance with my newbie questions...LOL.

825i front fender removal

I have the tech ref manual for my 825i (60001-) and trying to remove the driver side front fender. The tech ref just states remove bolt to OPS along all the screws fastening the fender to the chassis.

I removed the bolt but it is a larger size than tech ref and there is an extension on the OPS bar that seems to interlock to the cross member running left to right. There must be at least 1/2-in overlap. The narrowed down section fitting into the cross member has the threads to the bolt.

Do I have to go through the trouble of at least loosening the OPS and llfting it sufficiently to slide the fender out? It does not seem to want to flex that much to force it.

Power Steering issues on a 2013 825i

Folks: I have a 2013 825i Gator that I absolutely love! However, recently I have come across an intermittent problem regarding the power steering. Sometimes when you start it, the idiot light appears warning you of no power steering. Then you shut it off and restart and usually it goes away and power steering resumes to normal. Is this some sort of an electrical problem do you suspect or am I in for a more difficult situation regarding a power steering pump etc.? Please lend me your thoughts if you have experienced this problem. Thank you...MRH

Gator 825i (2013) Throttle Body Sticks partially OPEN

$

Folks, I have a 2013 Gator 825i with Power Steering and I absolutely love this machine. Recently however, I have experienced the throttle body sticking partially open which in turn creates a high idle rpm. This high idle doesn't allow for the clutch to disengage as well as lack of control when trying to slow down. Has anyone in Gator land experienced this issue of the throttle body staying partially open not allowing the engine RPMs to reduce to idle? If so, what have you done to alleviate this symptom. My John Deere Dealer has had two tries at it and can't seem to fix it. I've added springs etc., to the throttle body but still the throttle stays partially open which create a myriad of issues, not to mention safety issues as well. Your thoughtful Help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You... MRH

Help!!!!

Hey all, almost stranded today! I have a 2013 rsx 850i that has been running fine till today. Went for a ride and it was fine at first, then the upper left red light on dash came on intermittently and the manual calls it the check engine light (p) and it started cutting out. At first it would just miss once in a while but then it quit all together, but it restarted and drove for a little while and it did it again. Sounds to me like the engine control module may be quiting when it's hot. I believe this is mounted on the engine. Anyone had these symptoms??

High Altitude Running Problem

Took my 2012 RSX850i up to Red River, NM and started up Greenie Peak trail. About 9,500 ft it started running terrible. Got it back down to below 9,000 and it ran great. Next day I kept it above 4000 rpm and made it up to 10,200. shut it off for awhile. Then started it up to go back down. I thought we would never make it down. It missed and backfired and ran terrible down to about 9,000 then smoothed out. I called my dealer andhe told me about the High Altitude ECU re-flash and sent me a copy of the John Deere Service Bulletin. Has anyone had experience with this re-flash? If so, did it really help?

I have a 2015 825i with power steering. I don't use the Gator all that often, maybe once a month or so in the summer and in the winter to plow snow. Lately the power steering light will come on and power steering does not work when I initially turn it on. But it will work again after running a few minutes and turning the key off and starting it back up. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Snow plow

$

Anyone have a snow plow on their RSX 860i gator?

I have my old plow from my rhino and it is a KFI but I can't seem to locate a mount for the 860 yet.

I did add a superatv winch plate that has the 2" receiver and was wondering if anyone may have tried to make a plate in that that would mount the plow to.
Great site and thanks for any help.
