clutch rattling, belt jumping problems

My son got hung up on a log with the old 6x4 gator and suddenly the drive belt started jumping off. The only thing I could see was the brace between the motor and transmission was off one end. The bolt had broken off in the engine apparently n the past because it was covered with grease and grit. I figured maybe the motor or transmission had moved as it looked like the belt had too much deflection but discovered there's no position adjustment on either. I fabricated a new adjustable brace, bought a new belt and buttons and installed them, started it up and the belt jumped again within 15 ft. Pushed back into the garage, reinstalled the belt and watched to see what it was doing, When revved up clutches operate correctly but I noticed the inside movable shiv on the secondary clutch had a wobble as it got near full open but then settled down and ran even. When I let off as the clutch closed and belt came back to the top of the pulley, it started whipping up and down and jumped off every time I tried. I can't see a reason for that to happen so just to try it, I put an idler pulley lightly on top of the belt as shown in 1st photo below and it worked great, but there's got to be a reason this has happened, so if anyone has any thoughts, I'd like to hear them.
In case anyone else has the broken brace problem and can't get the broken bolt out, the 2nd photo shows the adjustable brace made from a garden tractor tie rod and 3rd is the barely visible angle iron bracket bolted to the floor pan,
I also figured out a way to change the buttons without removing clutch but will post that with pictures in a separate post.
The yellow wires are just holding those cables out of the way.
