Project: Gator

I think there are more lurkers on this section of the forum than posters, but any way here is my little project's thread. I am a self proclaimed enginerd; not an engineer, but I know enough to be dangerous about a lot of things. Hopefully I can document some decent tech, and maybe help some people answer questions as I answer many of my own (I have learned a lot from this forum in the last few months). There isn't a whole lot out on the 'net with these machines, especially once modified.

I have been wanting a SXS for some time now and never really knew which way I wanted to go. I travel GA, FL & AL as a farm machinery rep and have one particular dealer that sells red tractors and Polaris ATVs. Got to talking about what I wanted one day; I wanted to haul ass like a RZR but also have a hair of utility like a Ranger so I have the ability to use it when I want to. I started to pencil that into the budget, but the jury was still out (wife). But these guys are 200miles from my house and I have never dealt with the Polaris place 20min from me. There is no CanAm dealer close, so that's out.

Fast forward a little bit and I spot a handful of RSXs at a few of my green dealerships. I remember in '12 I test drove a RSX at a farm show and loved it. Started asking around to my salesmen about the RSX, have they had problem machines, happy customers, etc. Mainly people not really liking the torque, so they trade down to the smaller gators and a few relate the RSX to a Commander under a Gator hood. Sign me up! I really dig the dump bed and the physical size of the machine; bigger than a RZR yet smaller than a Ranger. Great plus is I have about 45 green dealers I deal with and one of them is 4miles from my house and I can make it there nearly all on dirt road.

So I kept my eyes peeled on their lots for a low hour unit while reading up all I could on the web here. Came to the end of May and the mongo discount was being lost for the '14 machines and I found a new '14 machine that was moved from MS, to AL, to GA in one of my chains. The price was right so here we are. Wasn't looking for a base model, but for the premium Deere & Co wants for a Sport; I can use the money I didn't spend and turn this into exactly what I want. And really all I am going to be doing is riding dirt roads around the house, going from camp to the toilet at mud bogs and the occasional trail ride with my pal's. Should be fun.

Sorry for the book, I get to rambling. I know I will have a good bit of questions, and there are some great people on this forum to answer them.

Like I said, picked up my RSX and the end of May.

Had some friends going riding that weekend, so I tagged along.

Second trail of the day. But put it in 4wd and it back right out.

All in all, the machine fully impressed me. Rode 95% of the trails in 2wd including some pretty respectable hill climbs. Ground clearance wasn't anything to right home about, but it wasn't a huge set-back. The biggest setback was these base model tires. They were too soft and let mud between the tire and wheel. I blew one bead way away from camp (no big deal, cleaned it up, shot some air in it and continued to haul ass) and when I got back from my trip to IN a few days later I had three flat tires on the trailer. Either way, not a terrible first time out.

But we made it back in one piece.
