Noise and no 4 x 4 !!!!

I've noticed that when climbing an embankment or creek side that when the front wheels go over the top that I have a noise similar to a hammer slapping an anvil. I've written it off as debri hitting the belly as have never found an issue or a failure. any way same thing this weekend but it happened several times and now I have no 4x4. it doesn't sound like its in the front end but more underneath the operator.

Before digging into it has anyone else had a similar experience or failure ??
