chain broke should gator still go?

1997 JD Gator 6x4 gas
I broke the drive chain on the drivers side today. In an effort to get out of the woods I locked the differential figuring it should work. Had problem however. Machine didnt want to lock in on other side and made a popping sound under where the break lever is,

Should I have been able to drive it with differential locked using passenger side duels and one wheel on drivers side? Any thoughts on popping sound?
